In January the Partridge Foundation awarded $1.0 million to establish an endowment to support MOFGA’s New Farmer Programs. It also pledged an additional $1.0 million if MOFGA can raise a similar amount before 2016. Read more.

USDA Finalizes New Microloan Program
USDA - 1/15/2013.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced a new microloan program from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) designed to help small and family operations, beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers secure loans under $35,000.

Editorial - Maine took an important step to protect children by phasing out the use of plastic baby bottles and sippy cups containing the chemical bisphenol-A. The Board of Environmental Protection should go a step further this week and vote to eliminate the chemical from baby food containers as well.

By Laura Reynolds and Catherine Ward - Despite the growing worldwide demand for organic food, clothing, and other products, the area of land certified as organic still makes up just 0.9 percent of global agricultural land. In 2010, the latest year for which data are available, 37 million hectares of land were organically farmed - an area that has grown more than threefold since 1999.
