USDA Announces Intent to Prepare Environmental Impact Statements for Genetically Engineered Plants Under Review for Deregulation
USDA - 5/10/2013.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today announced the Agency plans to prepare two separate environmental impact statements (EIS) to better inform decision-making regarding the regulatory status of crops genetically engineered (GE) to be resistant to the herbicides known as 2,4 dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and Dicamba. APHIS' Notices of Intent to prepare these EIS's will officially publish in the Federal Register in the near future, and each notice will be accompanied by a 60-day public comment period.
Why We Must Fight To Label GMOs
GreenMedInfo.com - 5/10/2013.
By Peggy Gannon - Since 1994 there's been an unnatural new player on our grocery store shelves. GMO is short for "genetically modified organism." It describes foods grown from seeds that have been altered through biotechnology to express certain desirable traits, such as pest resistance. Increasing concerns over genetically modified crops have prompted legislation in more than thirty states, where advocates are calling for clear labeling on all food that comes from genetically altered seeds. Labeling foods containing genetically modified ingredients will enable us to choose to avoid them. It is a policy long overdue.
Sonoma County Farm Uses Social Media to Cut Food Waste and Increase Profits
KQED - 5/10/2013.
By Rachel Dornhelm - When a California farm had two pallets of leftover vegetables after a farmers’ market, the farm manager posted their availability on Facebook, and “crop mobsters” bought them right away. This led to development of cropmobster.com for distributing excess produce and reducing crop waste.
Ignoring Bee Crisis, EPA Greenlights New 'Highly Toxic' Pesticide
Common Dreams - 5/9/2013.
By Lauren McCauley - The agency granted sulfoxaflor, a product of the Dow Chemical Company, "unconditional registration" for use on vegetables, fruits, barley, canola, ornamentals, soybeans and wheat among others, despite the EPA's own classification of the insecticide as "highly toxic to honey bees."
