Meet Rani and Jack Howe of Skyscraper Hill Farm in Brooks. This MOFGA certified organic farm raises Christmas trees, sold from the farm and through the Marsh River Co-op and the Belfast Co-op. Record-Breaking $17.3 Billion in Crop Losses Last Year; Significant Portion Potentially Avoidable

Extreme weather forced the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP) to pay out a record-breaking $17.3 billion in crop losses last year, much of which could have been prevented using water-smart strategies, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. Payments made to farmers during the 2012 growing season to cover losses from drought, heat and hot wind alone accounted for 80 percent of all farm losses, with many Upper Midwest and Great Plains states hit hardest.

Hinckley: Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC) has hired a farm manager and a sustainable agriculture instructor to lead its innovative new agricultural programs at the Harold Alfond Campus. Daniel MacPhee of Palermo, Maine has been selected as KVCC’s farm manager. Jacob Holzberg-Pill of Nevada City, California, has been hired as KVCC’s sustainable agriculture instructor.
