Saturday, August 6

North Branch Farm, Monroe, Maine
Fee: $50 non-members; $45 Student/Apprentice; $35 members; Journeypersons free
Information

Bud grafting is a great way to start your own fruit trees as well as many ornamentals. "Budding" uses individual buds from this year’s new growth to graft onto rootstock already set in the nursery. The workshop will be taught by Seth Yentes at North Branch Farm. Seth grafts thousands of trees every year. All the major tree fruit species will be covered. MOFGA will supply the buds and the rootstock. Participants should bring their own knives as well as a bag lunch.

To Recruit a New Generation of Farmers, We’ve Got to Get the Story Right
TakePart - 4/16/2013.
Op-Ed by Lindsey Lusher Shute - In the past year, the mainstream media featured more than a few stories critiquing America’s local and organic foods movement. Report on U.S. Meat Sounds Alarm on Resistant Bacteria
The New York Times - 4/16/2013.
By Stephanie Strom - More than half of samples of ground turkey, pork chops and ground beef collected from supermarkets for testing by the federal government contained a bacteria resistant to antibiotics, according to a new report highlighting the findings.
Six River Farm: Bowdoinham Farming/MOFGA Journeyperson Farm Training Program
Portland Press Herald - 4/16/2013.
By Sharon Kitchens - You’d never have guessed it was a cold rainy day in early April, to look at row after row of seedlings in one of the greenhouses at Six River Farm in Bowdoinham, Maine. Farmers Gabrielle Gosselin and Nate Drummond had agreed to meet me there so I could ask them about the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) Journeyperson Farm Training Program.
