Meet Rani and Jack Howe of Skyscraper Hill Farm in Brooks. This MOFGA certified organic farm raises Christmas trees, sold from the farm and through the Marsh River Co-op and the Belfast Co-op. Late yesterday, Governor John Kitzhaber (D-OR) signed into law a bill banning commercial production of canola (rapeseed) until 2019 inside the three million acre Willamette Valley Protected District, one of the world’s pre-eminent vegetable seed producing regions.

Despite years of food safety scandals surrounding China and another recent bird flu outbreak there, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is moving closer to opening the U.S. market to Chinese-processed chicken by sending two of its senior food safety officials to Beijing next week for a bilateral meeting on the subject.
