Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
First day of weekly (Portland) farmers’ market
Portland Press Herald - 4/2/2009.
By Avery Yale Kamila – Today marked the official start of the weekly farmers' market in Monument Square. Dan from Sumner Valley Farm and Mike from Uncle's Farm Stand were there as the vanguard of the 30+ farmers who will fill the square by the time summer rolls around. Look for these guys (and hopefully others) next Wednesday from about 8:30 am until about 1:30 pm. Once the weather improves, the official market hours of 7 am-2 pm kick in.
Get toxic chemicals out of products used by children
Bangor Daily News - 4/2/2009.
Guest Column by Heather vanFrankenhuyzen and Cathy Anderson – As small retailers, we’re anxious to see an end to the stress and uncertainty over dangerous chemicals being used in the products we sell – especially in products designed for children. These chemicals lead to costly disease and take a tremendous toll on our families, our pocketbooks, and our health system.

Sun Journal - 4/2/2009.
By Kathryn Skelton – State agriculture officials in white containment suits and masks spent Wednesday going in and out of buildings at the former DeCoster Egg Farm, searching for evidence of animal cruelty.
