Know Your Organic Producers!

Mousam Valley Mushrooms is a family farm started by father John Sharood, son Robert Sharood and daughter Emily Sharood. The MOFGA certified organic farm is located above the Mousam River Valley in Springvale, inside an old historic dairy barn that has been renovated into the mushroom farm. The Sharoods sustainably grow and market healthy, innovative, organic oyster mushrooms, including an Italian, Pink, Butter, and a Katahdin oyster that is a native Maine strain. Mushrooms are delivered within 24 to 48 hours of harvest and are grown exclusively for the New England area, making them truly fresh and local. Mousam Valley wholesales to Whole Foods Market, Hannaford Supermarket, Crown O' Maine and Rosemont Market. The Sharood family says, "At Mousam Valley, we strive to grow mushrooms as close to wild as possible. We cultivate our fungi on Maine hardwood and straw, sourced sustainably from the very woods and fields we forage in. The end result is a mushroom that could have been picked right off the side of your favorite hiking path. The only difference is that we grow them safely year round and know exactly when they will be perfect for you to enjoy!" Follow the farm at on Facebook and at http://mousamvalleymushrooms.com/.

Drought that ravaged US crops likely to worsen in 2013, forecast warns

Study: Mediterranean Diet Can Save Money
The Atlantic - 3/21/2013.
By Lindsay Abrams - The New England Journal of Medicine told us last month that the fresh produce, olive oil, and nut-filled Mediterranean diet confers significant health benefits, reducing the rates of heart attacks and strokes more so than diets that rely on low-fat foods. It's believed to contribute to well-being and feelings of happiness, too.
Whipping up something good at Sailor’s Rest Farm
Penobscot Bay Pilot - 3/21/2013.
By Kay Stephens - Ladleah Dunn is a sailor and a darn good cook. More importantly, she aims to not take the foodie industry in Maine so seriously or make it too precious. Her culinary adventures stem largely from her own small farm in Lincolnville; what’s ridiculous is how she makes it look so easy.
New kinds of GM plants and pesticides not being assessed for safety
GM Watch - 3/21/2013.
In a new peer-reviewed paper published by an international team from New Zealand, Brazil, and Australia in the prestigious journal Environment International, the researchers Jack A. Heinemann, Sarah Z. Agapito-Tenfen and Judy A. Carman have found that government safety regulators are failing to consider important risks of new kinds of genetically modified (GM) plants and some emerging co-technologies. (The article concerns plants engineered to make double-stranded RNA, dsRNA, which alters the way genes are expressed.)
