Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Global Grain Stocks Drop Dangerously Low as 2012 Consumption Exceeded Production
Earth Policy Institute - 1/17/2013.
By Janet Larsen - The world produced 2,241 million tons of grain in 2012, down 75 million tons or 3 percent from the 2011 record harvest. The drop was largely because of droughts that devastated several major crops - namely corn in the United States (the world’s largest crop) and wheat in Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Australia.

Daily Mail [UK] - 1/17/2013.
By Anna Hodgekiss - Scientists have discovered that optimistic folk have higher levels of plant compounds called carotenoids in their blood. A commonly-known carotenoid is beta-carotene, a pigment found in high levels in orange fruit and veg and green, leafy vegetables.
Despite Heavy Rains, Drought Persists
Weather Underground - 1/17/2013.
By Andrew Freedman - The economic impacts of this drought have been staggering. The drought of 2011-12, which is still ongoing, is comparable in size to severe droughts that occurred in the 1950s, and is already being blamed for more than $35 billion in crop losses alone, according to the reinsurance company Aon Benfield. Others estimate that the total cost could exceed $100 billion, making this event rival Hurricane Sandy for the most expensive natural disaster of 2012.
Worms Produce Another Kind of Gold for Farmers
Mercola.com - 1/17/2013.
By Dr. Joseph Mercola - A small but growing group of farmers are tending not to corn or cattle, but to worms. These intriguing creatures’ digestive process naturally excretes beneficial microbes into the soil, which drastically alter the soil’s composition.
