The 2015 Fair Posters are Here!

This year's Fair poster is available for $10 (plus $4 postage). Order online or call the MOFGA office at 207-568-4142.

The 2015 Fair poster portrays a goat chewing on a green manure crop with a native pollinator in the background. The artist, Arika von Edler, has been working on organic farms in Maine for 10 years and is currently in San Francisco working on her master’s degree. Her art highlights land stewardship though cover cropping, rotational grazing of livestock and supporting native pollinators. These topics and more will be featured at this year’s Fair on September 25, 26 and 27.

GMO potatoes have arrived. But will anyone buy them?
National Public Radio - 1/13/2015.
By Dan Charles - On the face of it, the new potato varieties called "Innate" seem attractive. If you peel the brown skin off their white flesh, you won't find many unsightly black spots. And when you fry them, you'll probably get a much smaller dose of a potentially harmful chemical. But here's the catch: Some of the biggest potato buyers in the country, such as Frito-Lay and McDonald's, seem afraid to touch these potatoes. Others don't even want to talk about them because they are genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.
Maine Bill Would Legalize Full-Scale Industrial Hemp Farming, Effectively Nullify Federal Prohibition
Tenth Amendment Center - 1/12/2015.
By Shane Trejo - A bill introduced in the Maine state house would authorize the farming, production, and sale of industrial hemp in the state, effectively nullifying the federal prohibition on the same once put into effect.
Pesticide Industry Stands Firm Amid Pressure To Reveal Identity Of Inert Ingredients
Environmental Science & Technology - 1/12/2015.
By Britt E. Erickson - Pesticide manufacturers and the Environmental Protection Agency are feeling the heat from consumers and environmental advocacy groups to reveal all of the chemicals in pesticide formulations – and not just the active ingredients that kill insects, rodents, or weeds. Of particular concern are the so-called inert ingredients – chemicals in pesticides that perform functions other than controlling pests.
Pixie Day of Washington, Maine: A Great Herdswoman's Legacy Lives On
Mother Earth News - 1/12/2015.
By Dyan Redick - I would be remiss if I didn’t dedicate this blog to the memory of a goat herdswomen I had the privilege to know. We’ve lost Pixie Day, a woman who devoted the last 50 years of her life to goats. At the age of 88, while tending her herd, Pixie lost her footing coming back from the barn in early December and didn’t recover. Some might say this is a sad ending. It is. But it’s also an amazing example of devotion to animals.
