Renewed concern over new risk assessment of glyphosate
GM Watch - 10/10/2014.
At the beginning of this year, German authorities published a Renewal Assessment Report (RAR) as part of an EU reevaluation process for the most widely used weed killer [glyphosate]. According to the German authorities, there were no risks to health, and it was even suggested that the acceptable daily thresholds for long term exposure to which consumers could be exposed might be raised. In contrast to these findings, a recent Testbiotech analysis shows that the German assessment report is untenable in light of new scientific evidence. Testbiotech concluded that risks associated with glyphosate must be examined much more closely.
Reducing Water Pollution Would Generate Billions in Economic Activity
Environmental Working Group - 10/10/2014.
By Mike Lavender - Cleaner water in the Chesapeake Bay could mean billions of dollars in economic growth for the region. That’s the conclusion of a peer-reviewed economic assessment released earlier this week (Oct. 6) by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, which found that fully implementing a Chesapeake Bay cleanup plan would result in at least $22.5 billion a year in economic benefits for farmers, businesses, recreation, homeowners and others.
Stringent plant variety protection may impinge on right to food
Third World Network - 10/10/2014.
South-North Development Monitor - Plant variety protection based on the 1991 Act of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV 91) will make it harder for small-scale farmers to access improved seeds, a key feature of the right to food of resource-poor farmers, says a new report.
Flavors fuel food industry, but remain a mystery
Portland Press Herald - 10/9/2014.
By Susan Axelrod - “Artificial and natural flavors” have become ubiquitous terms on food labels, helping create vivid tastes that would otherwise be lost in mass production. As the science behind them advances, however, some are calling for greater transparency about their safety and ingredients.
