Science News - 6/3/2009.By Janet Raloff – A new study links two weed killers with pancreatic cancer in pesticide applicators and their spouses. The authors, most of whom work for the National Cancer Institute, note that they are the first to link this particular malignancy with the farm chemicals — pendimethalin and EPTC — and really don’t know how either would trigger cancer (although they do have a theory).

For example: In wheat and barley, protein concentrations declined by 30 to 50 percent between the years 1938 and 1990. Likewise, a study of 45 corn varieties developed from 1920 to 2001, grown side by side, found that the concentrations of protein, oil and three amino acids have all declined in the newer varieties. Six minerals have declined by 22 to 39 percent in 14 widely grown wheat varieties developed over the past 100 years.

Now he thinks his worst GMO nightmare may be coming true. Roundup Ready sugarbeets – a patented variety engineered by Monsanto to tolerate the company’s widely used Roundup herbicide – have turned up in a soil mixture being sold to gardeners at a Corvallis landscaping supply business just a few miles from Morton’s fields.
