Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Accolades from Bon Appetit, Travel & Leisure, for North Haven’s Nebo Lodge
Bangor Daily News - 4/18/2013.
By Emily Burnham - The praise keeps piling up for Nebo Lodge, the inn and restaurant on the Penobscot Bay island of North Haven. Last summer Food & Wine magazine named Nebo Lodge chef Amanda Hallowell as one of its best new chefs. This month, two separate magazines have lauded the island eatery and hotel for its food and overall experience.
Controversial bill allowing dragging for lobsters supported by Maine regulators
Bangor Daily News - 4/18/2013.
By Bill Trotter - Though a similar proposal was roundly rejected in 2007, a bill that would allow lobsters caught in drag nets to be kept and sold in Maine is back before the Legislature. Like the last time around, there is strong opposition from Maine lobster fishermen against the bill. Unlike 2007, however, the Maine Department of Marine Resources supports the proposal.
Legislature to address genetically modified foods
Waterville Morning Sentinel - 4/18/2013.
The vast majority of Maine people want to know if the food they eat contains genetically modified organisms.A recent Maine poll conducted by PanAtlanticSMS Group in Portland found that 91.1 percent of Maine people want food that contains genetically modified organisms to be labeled as such. This number seems unbelievably high until it is compared with 11 national polls that confirm at least 75 percent of Americans agree.
Support labeling of genetically modified foods in Maine
Bangor Daily News - 4/18/2013.
By Dr. Michael Noonan - A bill before the Legislature would require labeling of genetically modified foods in Maine. I encourage readers of this column to contact your local state representative and senator and ask them to support this bill, L.D. 718, An Act to Protect Maine Food Consumers’ Right to Know About Genetically Engineered Food and Seed Stock.
