Penobscot Bay Pilot - 8/29/2017. High in the trees, as soon as the first leaf buds begin to open in the early spring, browntail moth caterpillars emerge from their winter nests. The larvae voraciously feed on the young leaves with a particular appetite for hardwood species, including oak and apple.

For miles around, the earth is dun-colored and dry, stubbled with yellow grass. But the hillsides directly across from me are emblazoned with vast swaths of trees planted in geometric shapes: a square, a circle, overlapping triangles. The flatland below is striped with bands of identical young pines, standing in rigid formation like soldiers on parade.
