Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
New York, Delaware oppose Maine plan to loosen smog rules
Portland Press Herald - 10/22/2013.
By Colin Woodard - Augusta: Delaware and New York are opposing Maine’s proposal to loosen its anti-smog regulations, claiming it violates federal law and undermines efforts to reduce ozone and other air pollution in eastern states.
Natural/Organic Brands No Longer Hiding Behind Lobbying Organization
The Cornucopia Institute - 10/22/2013.
Proposition I-522, a citizen’s initiative on the November 5 ballot in Washington state that would mandate clear labeling of genetically engineered (GE) ingredients on food packages, has become the most expensive initiative campaign in the state’s history. The high-priced battleground is pitting consumer and farmer advocates against multi-billion-dollar agribusiness corporations.
Less Corn, More Fruits and Vegetables Would Benefit U.S. Farmers, Consumers and Rural Communities
Union of Concerned Scientists - 10/22/2013.
If farm policies helped Americans choose healthier foods, U.S. farmers would grow them, bringing a host of benefits to farm country, according to a report by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). “The Healthy Farmland Diet: How Growing Less Corn Would Improve Our Health and Help America’s Heartland” is a first-of-its-kind report that uses economic modeling to estimate the impacts of dietary shifts on farm production.
Now This Is Natural Food
The New York Times - 10/22/2013.
By Mark Bittman - A few weeks ago at the annual Prairie Festival in Salina, Kan. – a celebration, essentially, of true sustainability – I sat down with Wes Jackson to drink rich beer and eat delicious, chewy bread made from the perennial grain Kernza. The Kernza we ate was cultivated at the Land Institute, the festival’s sponsor and the organization Jackson founded here 37 years ago.
