Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Scientists Discover New Route for GM-gene 'Escape'
Institute for Science in Society - 3/3/2011.
By Dr. Mae-Wan Ho – Scientists at Bristol University in the UK announced the discovery of [1] “a previously unknown route” whereby “GM genes may escape into the natural environment.” “Escape” is a misnomer. There is no need for the GM (genetically modified) genes to “escape”, when genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been released in great abundance and with gay abandon into the environment over the past 17 years. At issue is how fast and how widely the GM genes can spread, and what dire consequences could arise.
California farmers face frightening water debt during drought
TreeHugger - 3/2/2011.
By Jaymi Heimbuch – California farms represent 8% of the US's agriculture value, and the Central Valley is where most of that growing takes place. However, as the state struggles with ongoing droughts, the groundwater supplies are dwindling at a frightening rate.
Get Your Garden Growing: Low Tunnels for Earlier Spring Harvests
TreeHugger - 3/2/2011.
By Colleen Vanderlinden – We're a little over two months away from our last frost date, but I'm getting ready to sow a few seeds and plant cool season vegetables out in the garden. With a simple, inexpensive low tunnel, you can do the same, and be enjoying your first harvest by the time you'd normally just be able to start planting.
Backpack program launched to help end hunger in SAD 4
Bangor Daily News - 3/2/2011.
By Diana Bowley – Guilford: With home heating oil and gasoline prices on the rise again and jobs still scarce in northern Maine, United Way officials fear that more people may go hungry, especially children.
