Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Agricultural Development Grants Announced
Maine Department of Agriculture - 1/14/2015.
Commissioner Walter Whitcomb announced 11 Agricultural Development Grant Program awards totaling over $422,855 at the Maine Agricultural Trades Show today. The preliminary selections were chosen by a review committee from 47 proposals submitted in response to a formal Request For Proposals (RFP) in November. The projects address needs in the agricultural industry for accelerating new market development, adoption of improved technology and promotion of agricultural products produced in Maine.
Plan to save monarch butterflies backfires
Science - 1/13/2015.
By Lizzie Wade - It started with the best of intentions. When evidence emerged that monarch butterflies were losing the milkweed they depend on due to the spread of herbicide-resistant crops in the United States, people across the country took action, planting milkweed in their own gardens. But a new paper shows that well-meaning gardeners might actually be endangering the butterflies’ iconic migration to Mexico. That’s because people have been planting the wrong species of milkweed, thereby increasing the odds of monarchs becoming infected with a crippling parasite.
GMO potatoes have arrived. But will anyone buy them?
National Public Radio - 1/13/2015.
By Dan Charles - On the face of it, the new potato varieties called "Innate" seem attractive. If you peel the brown skin off their white flesh, you won't find many unsightly black spots. And when you fry them, you'll probably get a much smaller dose of a potentially harmful chemical. But here's the catch: Some of the biggest potato buyers in the country, such as Frito-Lay and McDonald's, seem afraid to touch these potatoes. Others don't even want to talk about them because they are genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.
Poll: An appetite for labeling GMO foods
Burlington Free Press - 1/13/2015.
By Mary Clare Jalonick, Associated Press - A large majority of Americans support labeling of genetically modified foods, whether they care about eating them or not. According to a December Associated Press-GfK poll, 66 percent of Americans favor requiring food manufacturers to put labels on products that contain genetically modified organisms, or foods grown from seeds engineered in labs.
