Suzanne Balbo and Clint Towle
of Crooked Door Farm in Whitefield

Know Your Organic Producers!

Meet Suzanne Balbo and Clint Towle of MOFGA-certified organic Crooked Door Farm in Whitefield. The two MOFGA journeypersons raise vegetables on permanent beds using minimal tillage, a biodiesel walk-behind tractor and a variety of hand tools, including a broad fork. They also use organic seed and local, organic compost on the 3 acres they have in rotation. An unheated greenhouse, a seedling house, caterpillar tunnels and low hoops help extend the growing season. Laying hens and guinea hogs root around, while a neighbor's goats and sheep rotate around Crooked Door's nearly 14 acres of pasture. Balbo and Towle market through their CSA, at the Gardiner Area Farmers' Market, the Gardiner Co-op & Café, the Sheepscot General Store and from their farm. Learn more on the farm's website and on Facebook. Please support MOFGA certified organic farmers and producers!

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Newfoundlander has largest hops farm in Maine
The Telegram [St. John’s] - 7/16/2013.
By Josh Pennell - The reputation Newfoundlanders have of enjoying a drop of the pure has been mythologized far and wide, so perhaps it's fitting that a native of Kilbride has found herself - along with her husband and two young girls - the owner of the largest hops farm in the state of Maine. Don't be fooled by the size of the acreage, though. Aroostook Hops is all about quality over quantity.
Are We Entitled to Know Where Meat Comes From?
Care2 - 7/16/2013.
By Alicia Graef - According to cattle and pork associations, the answer is a resounding “no.” In an effort to combat new labeling rules that were implemented in May – rules that would require them to provide more details about the origins of their products – these groups are taking the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to court.
Stabenow Says Food Programs Will Remain in Final Farm Bill
Roll Call - 7/15/2013.
By Ellyn Ferguson - The chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee said Monday that she is worried lawmakers could run out of time to produce a final farm bill if House leaders do not quickly send their chamber’s agriculture-only version to the Senate. In addition, Stabenow dispelled any notion that nutrition programs would be left out of the final product of a Senate-House conference. A bill without the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is one that “we could not pass that through the Senate nor would the president of the United States sign that kind of a bill,” the Michigan Democrat told reporters.
Celebrity Rehab for Lawns and Soil
Ecological Landscaping Alliance - 7/15/2013.
By Phil Haynes - Everyone can empathize with the trauma a person must go through to withdraw from chemical dependencies, and I believe there are some real similarities with rehabilitating your lawn and soil, though not as bad as what you might see on Celebrity Rehab!
