Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Full plate for Obama’s new FDA administrator
San Francisco Chronicle - 4/10/2009.
By Marion Nestle – The FDA desperately needs fixing. This agency oversees the safety of drugs, medical devices, and food for animals as well as people. This is a large order, but the FDA faces particular hurdles. The industries it regulates do not like being regulated. They prefer self-regulation, and they let Congress know it.
Shades of Green: Quantifying the Benefits of Organic Dairy Production
Organic Center - 4/9/2009.
The "avoided impacts" stemming from applications of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides, and several classes of animal drugs can now be estimated for a single milking cow, a given herd of milking animals, across all cows in a region or all farms shipping to a given dairy processing company, or even for a gallon of milk.
Big Ag: give us carbon credit, but don’t cap our emissions
Grist - 4/9/2009.
By Tom Philpott – As Congress gears up to consider climate legislation, agribusiness is getting sweaty palms – and for good reason. A landmark 2007 FAO study credited industrial meat production with nearly a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions – a higher propportion than transportation.
An earthy non-prescription anti-depressant
Grist - 4/8/2009.
By Kit Stolz – Medical researchers in the United Kingdom have found evidence that “friendly” bacteria found in soil may activate the immune system, produce the brain compound serotonin, and help ward off depression. According to a study published last week in Neuroscience, researchers from Bristol University and University College London found that mice treated with the soil agent Mycobacterium vaccae behaved much like mice treated with anti-depressants.
