Know Your Organic Producers!

Meet Amy Warner and Toby Stockford of Old Narrow Gauge Farm in Alna. Amy and Toby raise and breed heritage Gloucestershire Old Spots pigs for registered breed stock and pork and are members of The Livestock Conservancy. They also offer eggs from their mixed flock of free range hens. You can find their products at Bath summer and winter farmers' markets, Boothbay farmers' market, local restaurants and the Alna Store. They also offer some CSA options in conjunction with other Alna farms. "We are happy to raise livestock in a manner that benefits the health and well-being of the animals," say the Stockfords, "especially the focus on management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony that organic farming intends. We feel that comes though in our quality breed stock and in the flavor and caliber of our heritage pork and eggs." Find Old Narrow Gauge Farm at oldnarrowgaugefarm.com and on Facebook and Instagram.

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Small dairies struggle to survive in Colorado
The Durango Herald - 12/11/2013.
By Eric Brown - The general claim that there’s limited opportunity for small producers in agriculture has been proved wrong in many ways in Weld County [Colo.], but it certainly holds water – or milk – when it comes to one of the largest contributors to the local ag economy.
Stomach-churning CDC report on restaurant food safety
San Francisco Chronicle - 12/10/2013.

How to grow chickens without buying grain
Treehugger - 12/10/2013.
By Sami Grover - Why waste agricultural effort on growing feed for animals when we can simply feed ourselves? That's the most simple premise behind the environmental case for veganism. But that equation gets a bit more complicated when animals don't eat food fit for humans—but rather turn resources we couldn't otherwise eat, whether it's trash or grass, into a high-value protein for human consumption.
Will Shuanghui keep the world's largest pork producer environmentally clean?
The Guardian [UK] - 12/10/2013.
By Heather Duncan - After racking up millions of dollars in environmental fines for water contamination in the 1990s, the world's biggest hog and pork producer, Smithfield Foods, has been working hard to convince critics that it has changed. Over the past decade, its sustainability efforts have garnered awards and international certifications. But its sale to Chinese meat processor Shuanghui International Holdings in September has raised new questions about the future of its sustainability commitments.
