Maine newspapers support LD 718

Bangor Daily News: Give consumers a choice and label genetically modified foods

"LD 718, sponsored by Rep. Lance Harvell, R-Farmington, and co-sponsored by 123 Republicans, Democrats and independents, would require that foods containing genetically modified organisms be labeled as such. It should pass." Read the full editorial

Portland Press Herald: Legislature should pass GMO labeling bill

"Consumers have a right to know whether their food has genetically engineered ingredients. Free markets work best when consumers have what they need to make informed choices. That is the concept behind L.D. 718, the genetically modified organism labeling bill now before the Legislature. That is also the reason that lawmakers should pass this law this year." Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Campbell's Soup Starts to Remove Bisphenol A from Cans
Environmental News Service - 3/7/2012.
Months of pressure from consumer, public health and concerned parents' organizations worried about the health effects of the chemical bisphenol A in canned food linings are having an impact on the Campbell's Soup Company. The New Jersey company says it has begun to phase out the use of the chemical in its cans.
Food hubs: how small farmers get to market
Grist - 3/7/2012.
By Claire Thompson – Ask most small and mid-sized farmers who sell food to a local audience what they like least about their job and they will probably say marketing and distribution. Enter food hubs.
Year-round gardening in Maine? Really? Really
Portland Press Herald - 3/7/2012.
By Avery Yale Kamila – David Tidwell didn't intend to create a business. He only wanted to build a greenhouse that would allow his wife, Marlene, to grow organic vegetables year-round at their home in New Gloucester.
Maine’s farmers likely to regret Agriculture-Conservation merger
Kennebec Journal - 3/7/2012.
Op-ed by George Smith – I can't wait to pick tomatoes at Mount Blue State Park, and I'll bet those fields of pumpkins in Camden Hills State Park will be a big hit with kids come Halloween. Great idea – putting state parks and public lands in Maine's Department of Agriculture! Maybe that's just the spark that farming needs to regain its place in the state's economy. More than likely, it will be something the state's agricultural industry regrets in the years to come.
