Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Farming at a crossroads: will farmers rely on agribusiness or find alternatives to fight superweeds?
Treehugger - 3/7/2012.
By Rachel Cernansky – As the debate over 2,4-d—the widely-used herbicide and Agent Orange ingredient—rattles on in Washington, a larger battle is taking place on American farms over how the fight against superweeds will be fought in the future.
The fight to label genetically modified foods goes national
The Atlantic - 3/7/2012.
By Marion Nestle – I was just handed a petition for a ballot initiative to label genetically modified foods. I signed it, but how come GM foods aren't already labeled? Labeling GM foods should be a no-brainer. Practically everyone wants them labeled.
Maine’s farmers likely to regret Agriculture-Conservation merger
Kennebec Journal - 3/7/2012.
Op-ed by George Smith – I can't wait to pick tomatoes at Mount Blue State Park, and I'll bet those fields of pumpkins in Camden Hills State Park will be a big hit with kids come Halloween. Great idea – putting state parks and public lands in Maine's Department of Agriculture! Maybe that's just the spark that farming needs to regain its place in the state's economy. More than likely, it will be something the state's agricultural industry regrets in the years to come.
Year-round gardening in Maine? Really? Really
Portland Press Herald - 3/7/2012.
By Avery Yale Kamila – David Tidwell didn't intend to create a business. He only wanted to build a greenhouse that would allow his wife, Marlene, to grow organic vegetables year-round at their home in New Gloucester.
