Hosted by Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District, MOFGA and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Dave Colson, MOFGA's agricultural services director, will lead a tour of a cover crop demonstration planted at New Leaf Farm. Learn about cover crops and their pros and cons. Maine DEP lists 49 ‘chemicals of high concern’

AP – Augusta: The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has released the state's official list of 49 chemicals used in everyday products that could represent a danger to children. The list includes a dozen chemicals proven to cause cancer in humans, including formaldehyde, benzene, vinyl chloride, arsenic and cadmium.
Farms’ use of antibiotics adds to ‘superbug’ risk

Op-ed by The Washington Post – The Food and Drug Administration announced in 1977 that it would begin prohibiting the use of some antibiotics in agriculture, but Congress objected and nothing happened. Since then, the need for restraint has grown. The wonder drugs of the 20th century have been so widely used that germs are becoming resistant to them, giving rise to "superbugs," bacteria that are immune to one or more antibiotics.
