"Perhaps the most radical thing you can do in our time is to start turning over the soil, loosening it up for the crops to settle in, and then stay home and tend them."
- Rebecca Solnit

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Fertilizer plants go under the radar
Portland Press Herald - 4/21/2013.
By Jack Gillum and Ramit Plushnick-Masti, AP - There were no sprinklers. No firewalls. No water deluge systems. Safety inspections were rare at the fertilizer company in West, Texas, that exploded and killed at least 14 people this week. This is not unusual.
100 years ago: Exodus of farmers to the colonies
The Guardian [UK] - 4/21/2013.
By A. Nicholson - Originally published in the Manchester Guardian on 26 April 1913. Week after week the ablest of our young farmers and labourers are leaving the agricultural districts of the North for our colonies or, in many cases, for the United States.
Earth Day 2013: Land for food under attack worldwide
Rabble - 4/19/2013.
By Sally Miller - As Earth Week 2013 rolls around, a frenzy of land grabbing threatens our food supply, Indigenous land use practices, access to water and the future of farming.
What Do the Birders Know?
The New York Times - 4/19/2013.
Op-Ed by Brian Kimberling - A Bird-watcher is a kind of pious predator. To see a new bird is to capture it, metaphorically, and a rare bird or an F.O.Y. (First of the Year, for the uninitiated) is a kind of trophy. A list of birds seen on a given day is also a form of prayer, a thanksgiving for being alive at a certain time and place. Posting that list online is a 21st-century form of a votive offering.
