MOFGA's Farm Training Project Workshops
Weekly, June through September
at farm locations throughout Maine
Free

Designed to augment the on-farm learning of the farm apprenticeship program, MOFGA's Farm Training Project (FTP) workshops follow an informal format, usually beginning with a farm tour followed by a presentation on the topic of the day. Participants are invited to stay for a potluck supper – bring a dish or something fresh from the farm to share (please bring your own place setting as well). All events are held rain or shine and are free and open to the public. For more information or directions to any of the workshops, call 568-6018, email education@mofga.org, or check the FTP website.

Social Supermarkets A 'Win-Win-Win' For Europe's Poor
National Public Radio - 12/12/2013.
By Serri Graslie, The Salt - Somewhere between a food pantry and a traditional grocery store lies an opportunity to help feed those in need. Enter "social supermarkets," a European model that offers discounted food exclusively to those in poverty.
Public Health Still Threatened as Toothless FDA Antibiotic Plan Slammed
Common Dreams - 12/12/2013.
By Andrea Germanos - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's newly unveiled "voluntary plan with industry" to curb the use of antibiotics in livestock does too little, too late to address the public health crisis posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, critics charge.
The tree of knowledge of good and evil
Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy - 12/12/2013.
By Dale Wiehoff - Despite the range, diversity and quantity of apples produced in the world, however, Malus domestica apparently isn’t measuring up to the modern consumer’s expectations. At least that’s what Neal Carter, president of Okanagan Specialty Fruits thinks. He has developed genetically engineered Granny Smith and Golden Delicious apples that won’t turn brown when the flesh is exposed to air.
Mixed Reactions to New FDA Regulations for Antibiotic Use
National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition - 12/12/2013.
FDA has released new regulations intended to combat antibiotic resistance by curbing the use of medically important antibiotics in livestock production. The voluntary guidance to drug manufacturers and livestock producers would phase out the use of antimicrobials for growth promotion, currently a common practice in the livestock industry, and a new proposed rule would require a veterinary prescription to administer antibiotics to animals.
