This first-ever event will bring together folks who are excited about the future of heirloom fruit varieties: How to save them, what to do with them, how to make great cider, and who to work with. Held at a traditional Maine lakeside camp in Liberty, participants will check in for 2-1/2 days and 2 nights of immersive learning and community building.

Experts on heirloom fruit conservation in Maine and beyond will discuss how to bring back our lost fruit. We’ll cover efforts to preserve Maine apples, pears and other fruit as well as how those efforts connect (or might connect) to national and international projects. Some of New England’s most innovative hard-cider makers will cover the ins and outs of making our traditional beverage of choice. Others will cover organic orchard techniques and care, and creating community orchards. We will also explore how these forgotten fruits can return to prominence in restaurants, stores and bars as part of Maine’s food renaissance. For more information, click on the registration link.

New market day expands options for buying local
Portland Press Herald - 6/2/2010.
By Avery Yale Kamila – Buying local food in downtown Portland just got more convenient. Two weeks ago, the Portland Farmers Market added another day, with a new crop of farmers who intend to set up shop from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Monday in Monument Square.
Readers send recipes for variation on smooth, sweet rhubarb pie
Bangor Daily News - 6/2/2010.
By Sandy Oliver – Rhubarb custard pies! Yum. Sometimes they are called rhubarb creme pie, and unlike the Beebopareebop Rhubarb Pies, which Garrison Keillor of “A Prairie Home Companion” says will take the taste of shame and humiliation out of your mouth, this style of rhubarb pie is very smooth and sweet.
Building a market through community
Bangor Daily News - 6/2/2010.
Perry: Every one of us has visited a small, independent restaurant, business or little shop whose atmosphere is so welcoming, so comfortable, that not only do we feel completely at home, we want to return again and again. Visitors who walk through the centuries-old doors of The Red Sleigh on U.S. Route 1 in Perry are lucky enough to get that feeling.
California poised to approve deadly pesticide for strawberry crop
Grist - 6/2/2010.
By Tom Laskawy – The continuing disaster in the Gulf of Mexico helps one see other regulatory controversies in a different light. Take, for example, the battle in California over the use of the pesticide methyl iodide, a chemical so toxic, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, "that even chemists are reluctant to handle it."
