Aktan Askin of Lor Farm in Thorndike

Know Your Organic Producers!

Meet Aktan Askin and Erin McWalters of Lor Farm in Thorndike. Lor Farm, a sheep and goat dairy farm and cheese house, produces halloumi, ricotta, feta and sheep's milk yogurt based on recipes of Anatolian and Mediterranean origin. Aktan and Erin sell from the farm, at the Downtown Bangor Farmers' Market and at the Saturday Orono Farmers' Market. Aktan has been MOFGA's landscape coordinator and was a MOFGA journeyperson and volunteer. He will now be working for Fedco.

Time to shear the sheep

By Betty Adams – Augusta: The newly sheared sheep objected in the only way they could: a cacophony of "baas" as they gamboled around the small farmyard and felt the chill weather on their pinkish skin. Their thick fleece lay on a screen where Betty Stover picked out the bigger pieces of straw and dirt before packing it into bags labeled with the name of the sheep and the ear tag number.
