Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
The latest on genetically-modified foods: beets and apples
The Atlantic - 12/2/2010.
By Marion Nestle – I haven't seen much comment on what's happening with Center for Food Safety v. Vilsack (PDF), a suit to prevent planting of genetically modified (GM) sugar beets because USDA allowed them to be grown without filing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This is kind of after-the-fact because Monsanto's GM sugar beets have been planted widely for the last five years and now make up 95 percent of the sugar beet crop in the U.S.
Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act passes House 264-157, awaits Obama’s signature
The Atlantic - 12/2/2010.
By John Hendel – The House of Representatives has passed the $4.5 billion Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act, the Associated Press reports, by a margin of 264-157. The Senate passed a version in August, and the final version should be arriving on President Barack Obama's desk to be signed into law before long.
Why farmers are flocking to manure
The Atlantic - 12/2/2010.
By Gene Logsdon – I half-jokingly suggested about a year ago that animal manure – used livestock, horse, and chicken bedding – was going to be the hottest commodity on the Chicago Board of Trade one of these days. Shortly after that I got a call from a close acquaintance who manages an awesome business of growing 8,000 acres of corn and soybeans – which he knows I consider insane. He wanted to tell me something I never expected to hear from him: He was thinking of going into the feedlot beef business.
Procedural problem threatens food safety bill
Bangor Daily News - 12/2/2010.
By Lyndsey Layton – Washington: A procedural problem is threatening to derail a landmark food safety measure passed by the Senate on Tuesday, sending congressional leaders scrambling to figure out a way to get the bill enacted into law by the end of the lame-duck session this month.
