Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Harvest on the Harbor
Portland Press Herald - 10/6/2010.
By Meredith Goad – Chef Michael Ruoss has enjoyed watching Portland's reputation as a food town grow ever since he toiled in the student kitchens at Southern Maine Community College. Ruoss worked at the Seaman's Club and the Snow Squall just across the bridge, then went on to make a name for himself in New Orleans.
Apple Galette: Worth making from scratch
Bangor Daily News - 10/6/2010.
By Sandy Oliver – Here is a rustic little apple dish for a nice occasion, the recipe for which Carla Parsons in Harrington gave me. So, where having to make pastry slows me right down, Carla and Diane whip it right out with alacrity.
In Kenya, farmers grow their own way
Yes! - 10/5/2010.
By Heather Day, Travis English – We had just been visiting farmers cultivating land in the lush, steep hills north of the town of Thika in central Kenya. Samuel Nderitu, our guide and host, had one more project he wanted us to see: the Tumaini Women’s Group. They were meeting to found their community's first seed bank.
PeaceJam offers food for thought at Mount View
Village Soup - 10/5/2010.
By Tanya Mitchell – Thorndike: A recent visit to the Mount View School complex during lunchtime appears as it does at any other school at first glance, with chatty students flocking to the cafeteria line to take their midday meal. But a closer look reveals that the meals offered in the lunch program are anything but the hot lunches the parents of today's students likely experienced.
