Organic Orcharding Workshop: Bud Grafting

Saturday, August 6

North Branch Farm, Monroe, Maine
Fee: $50 non-members; $45 Student/Apprentice; $35 members; Journeypersons free
Information

Bud grafting is a great way to start your own fruit trees as well as many ornamentals. "Budding" uses individual buds from this year’s new growth to graft onto rootstock already set in the nursery. The workshop will be taught by Seth Yentes at North Branch Farm. Seth grafts thousands of trees every year. All the major tree fruit species will be covered. MOFGA will supply the buds and the rootstock. Participants should bring their own knives as well as a bag lunch.

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Senior project puts food on plates
Kennebec Journal - 9/17/2010.
By Matthew Stone – Readfield: Tyler DeAngelis lamented the look and taste of his lettuce one day at lunch during his sophomore year at Maranacook Community High School. The stuff in his salad, DeAngelis said, was "brown and slimy and wilted." "I was eating the cafeteria food and it was nasty," he said. "I want to show the kids that eating good food is the way to go."
Many veggies still growing as Jack Frost delays his arrival
Kennebec Journal - 9/17/2010.
By Denis Thoet – In a good year – and this is a good year – the slide into fall is the best part. Recent cool weather has pushed summer behind us, but there has been no frost, not even a prediction of frost for the coming week. That means we can keep ripening our tomatoes on the vine, keep hoping we might get another picking of green beans, delay harvesting our first crop of sweet potatoes.
Egg inquiry calls attention to rules in Maine
Portland Press Herald - 9/17/2010.
By David Sharp – Portland: Congressional investigators looking into problems at an Iowa farm owned by Austin "Jack" DeCoster that is at the center of a recall of 380 million eggs will get to see the promising results of stricter regulations at egg farms in Maine.
Bad egg day
The Atlantic - 9/16/2010.
By Corby Kummer – The recent egg recall is a real-time example of everything that's wrong with our current food system. Well-meaning federal regulatory agencies hamstrung by outdated rules and limited authority? Market economics that practically mandate the use of illegal migrant workers who are helpless to fight abusive working conditions that approach and sometimes become slavery? Consumers who unwittingly play along by shopping on price alone?
