Organic Orcharding Workshop: Bud Grafting

Saturday, August 6

North Branch Farm, Monroe, Maine
Fee: $50 non-members; $45 Student/Apprentice; $35 members; Journeypersons free
Information

Bud grafting is a great way to start your own fruit trees as well as many ornamentals. "Budding" uses individual buds from this year’s new growth to graft onto rootstock already set in the nursery. The workshop will be taught by Seth Yentes at North Branch Farm. Seth grafts thousands of trees every year. All the major tree fruit species will be covered. MOFGA will supply the buds and the rootstock. Participants should bring their own knives as well as a bag lunch.

Grist - 6/4/2010.

Bangor Daily News - 6/4/2010.
Editorial – A new registration system will, for the first time, allow nearby residents easily to ask for notification of when agricultural pesticides will be sprayed in the area. This is a positive step toward better public notification, which, unlike many government initiatives, requires follow-up to see whether the system is working.
Greenwashing corn: industrial ag tries to bolster its tarnished image
Huffington Post - 6/3/2010.
By Donald Carr – Starting this week (June 1) in Washington, DC, the National Corn Growers Association and its affiliated state associations are rolling out a $1 million ad campaign to boost corn's tarnished image. It's targeted at lawmakers in the nation's capital, the people who control corn's fate in terms both of environmental regulation and the lavish and increasingly hard-to-justify federal subsidies for the ubiquitous crop, which have totaled $73.8 billion in taxpayer dollars since 1995.
