"Perhaps the most radical thing you can do in our time is to start turning over the soil, loosening it up for the crops to settle in, and then stay home and tend them."
- Rebecca Solnit

2017 Poster for the Common Ground Country Fair

2017 Common Ground Country Fair Poster Unveiled

The 2017 Common Ground Country Fair poster was unveiled during the Maine Agricultural Trades Show this week. The poster features three Columbian Wyandotte chickens roosting. This uncommon variety is well suited to Maine’s climate and is raised for both meat and egg production. Local artist Dwight Gagnon of Benton created the design, which is a delightful and fitting image for the 41st annual Common Ground Country Fair, September 22, 23 and 24.
The poster is now available online through our MOFGA Store.

Don’t like today’s food monopolies? Blame Robert Bork
Grist - 12/21/2012.
By Tom Laskawy – The recently departed and extremely conservative Judge Robert Bork deserves credit (or, more accurately, blame) for the domination of our food system by a handful of mammoth corporations.
What the fiscal cliff would mean for our cities and food
Grist - 12/21/2012.
By Susie Cagle – Over the last several weeks of fiscal-cliff frenzy, we’ve heard a lot about taxes, taxes, taxes. It’s apocalypse now-ish! With only 10 days left before we go careening off that cliff, President Obama and congressional leaders are trying (so they say!) to stop the crazy train that they set rolling in the first place.
White House stalls critical EPA report highlighting chemical dangers to children
Investigative Reporting Workshop - 12/21/2012.
By Sheila Kaplan – A landmark Environmental Protection Agency report concluding that children exposed to toxic substances can develop learning disabilities, asthma and other health problems has been sidetracked indefinitely amid fierce opposition from the chemical industry. America’s Children and the Environment, Third Edition, is a sobering analysis of the way in which pollutants build up in children’s developing bodies and the damage they can inflict.
MRSA found in our milk: Superbug strain can cause serious infections in humans and is resistant to antibiotics
Daily Mail [UK] - 12/21/2012.
By Sean Poulter – Scientists tested 1,500 samples of bulk milk and found seven cases of MRSA ST398 (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) from five farms in England, Scotland and Wales. The Soil Association wants the UK government to crack down on antibiotic use on UK farms.
