Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Cold, hard fact: Portland lacks indoor winter farmers market
Portland Press Herald - 12/2/2009.
By Avery Yale Kamila – Being a bona fide foodie town, Portland tends to push the envelope when it comes to edible trends. But there's one gastronomic movement where Maine's biggest city is lagging behind in comparison to its suburban neighbors, and that is the establishment of an indoor winter farmers market.
Maine chef lives the dream
Portland Press Herald - 12/2/2009.
By Lawrence Klang – The Island Culinary and Ecological Center in Deer Isle is just getting off the ground, but you wouldn't know it based on the lively crowd of 75 food lovers gathered at the sold-out, first annual Top Chefs Dinner at the home of Peter and Beth Aherne in Little Deer Isle.
Maple syrup school gives Maine taste of respect
Portland Press Herald - 12/1/2009.
By Doug Harlow – Skowhegan: The largest maple syrup-producing county in the nation finally is getting some respect. The International Maple Syrup Institute, based in Ontario, will hold its sixth annual maple grading school in Skowhegan on Thursday and Friday. The two-day course will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
Agricultural learning center growing towards fruition
Portland Press Herald - 12/1/2009.
By Ann S. Kim – Despite fundraising challenges, the coalition that's planning a sustainable agriculture educational center at Tidewater Farm in Falmouth hopes to break ground next summer. The Tidewater Farm Regional Learning Center would be on 32 protected acres near the Presumpscot River Estuary. The 6,800-square-foot facility envisioned by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, the Cumberland County Extension Association and the Tidewater Farm Conservation Foundation would have classrooms, public spaces and the new Cumberland County headquarters for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
