"Perhaps the most radical thing you can do in our time is to start turning over the soil, loosening it up for the crops to settle in, and then stay home and tend them."

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Stain-resistant chemicals linked to high blood pressure during pregnancy
Environmental Health News - 7/18/2013.
Mothers’ exposure to chemicals that make consumer products stain- and water-resistant was linked to high blood pressure during pregnancy in an analysis of highly exposed communities in West Virginia and Ohio. Hypertension during pregnancy can be life-threatening for the mother and child. The study is the first prospective assessment of exposure and subsequent birth outcomes in this population.
Celebrating Maine malts, wheat, and wood-baked bread
Portland Phoenix - 7/18/2013.
By Laura McClandish - In An Everlasting Meal, chef Tamar Adler urges us to build whole meals around bread, the staff of life, as our ancestors once did. “Our lives don’t lean against it anymore,” she laments. “We’ve decided that bread is bad for us.”
Monsanto. Broccoli. I Love This. Really!
Mother Jones - 7/17/2013.
By Tom Philpott - As Michael Moss reports in a recent New York Times piece, a group of plant breeders from land-grant universities – including Cornell, the University of Maine, and the University of Tennessee – are looking to extend broccoli's growing season. Using conventional breeding (i.e., not genetic modification), they've created a breakthrough broccoli strain that can "thrive in hot, steamy summers like those in New York, South Carolina or Iowa," while also delivering heads that are "crisp, subtly sweet and utterly tender when eaten fresh-picked," Moss reports.

By David Biello - If it isn't torrential downpours, then it's too dry. If there's one thing US farmers can count on, it's bad weather, and perhaps as a result, many of them don't think humanity is to blame for the long-term shifts in weather patterns known as climate change.
