Seed Swap & Scion Exchange
Sunday, March 29, 2015
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center, Unity
FREE, no registration required

For gardeners and orchardists, it's the most wonderful flea market in the world. Not only that – most of the best stuff is free! MOFGA, the Maine Tree Crop Alliance, and Fedco will once again host the Seed Swap and Scionwood Exchange at MOFGA’s Common Ground Exhibition Hall in Unity. Please bring any seeds, scionwood or cuttings you have to share freely with others. In recent years we have given away scionwood from well over 200 fruit varieties. These contributions make the day a success. We'll supply labels, tape and markers, and we’ll be selling T-shirts, books, grafting supplies and rootstock. Admission is free. More details.

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Include heirloom vegetables in your garden this year
Bangor Daily News - 1/14/2012.
By Reeser Manley – The new year brings catalogs by snail mail and email invitations to online catalogs, each sender hankering for a fraction of my seed money for 2012. I know something about the business of selling garden seeds. My first paying job in horticulture was with the George W. Park Seed Co. in Greenwood, S.C., a position I eagerly accepted when it became clear, back in 1975, that a master’s degree in botany plus 50 cents would buy a cup of coffee.
Organic farmers’ suit against Monsanto goes to full hearing
Grainews - 1/13/2012.
A court hearing in New York City at the end of this month will determine if a "pre-emptive" lawsuit by a clutch of U.S. and Canadian organic producers against seed and ag chem firm Monsanto will go ahead. U.S. District Judge Naomi Buchwald said she will hear oral arguments Jan. 31 in Manhattan on a motion by St. Louis, Mo.-based Monsanto to dismiss the suit filed last March 31 by a group of 83 farmers, seed growers and farm organizations.
What it looks like when food grows everywhere
Transition Culture - 1/13/2012.
By Rob Hopkins – Today I’d like to share a map with you of the town of Guildford in 1793. What is so extraordinary about this map, upon close inspection, is how it captures what it looks like when food grows everywhere. Think of it, if you like, as Incredible Edible Guildford, circa. 1739.
One acre feeds a person
Farmland LP - 1/13/2012.
By Jason Bradford – With the holiday season behind us many are feeling the effects of eating a bit too much and are working on a New Year’s resolution to shed some pounds. This reminds me of a question I have been asked numerous times, i.e., “How much land does it take to feed somebody for a year?” To rid you of any suspense, I usually give the answer as about one acre when referring to the U.S. today.
