Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Rockport restaurant sees strong start
Bangor Daily News - 7/14/2010.
By Emily Burnham – Even though Shepherd’s Pie opened less than two months ago, it has been hard to get a table at the establishment. James Beard Award-nominated chef Brian Hill premiered the new restaurant in downtown Rockport in May, and it has been popular with locals and in-the-know tourists from the get-go.
Tainted cereal exposes soggy food-safety system
Grist - 7/13/2010.
By Tom Philpott – On June 25, Kellogg's issued a "voluntary recall" of 28 million boxes of its breakfast cereals, including Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, and Honey Smacks. The company revealed it had detected an "uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell coming from the liner in the package" of the suspect cereal and warned of "possible temporary symptoms, including nausea and diarrhea" from eating it.
Genetically modified salmon may be declared "safe” for human consumption
TreeHugger - 7/12/2010.
By John Laumer – This proposed commercial genetic trick – inserting the genes of a "pout fish" (as pictured) into Atlantic Salmon genes – has nothing to do with improved taste or texture or color or nutrition we'd appreciate as salmon-eating consumers. It's being done so farm-raised Atlantic salmon will eat year round, gaining weight through what would naturally have been the spawning season.
Meet the food industry front groups that push for carcinogens in your food
Alternet - 7/12/2010.
By Jill Richardson – Pseudoscience, front groups and smear campaigns against scientists questioning industrial agriculture are used to convince the public that chemical-ridden food is safe.
