Maine newspapers support LD 718

Bangor Daily News: Give consumers a choice and label genetically modified foods

"LD 718, sponsored by Rep. Lance Harvell, R-Farmington, and co-sponsored by 123 Republicans, Democrats and independents, would require that foods containing genetically modified organisms be labeled as such. It should pass." Read the full editorial

Portland Press Herald: Legislature should pass GMO labeling bill

"Consumers have a right to know whether their food has genetically engineered ingredients. Free markets work best when consumers have what they need to make informed choices. That is the concept behind L.D. 718, the genetically modified organism labeling bill now before the Legislature. That is also the reason that lawmakers should pass this law this year." 6 steps for planning next year’s garden
TreeHugger - 12/31/2011.

Another shady land deal in Africa, this one assisted by the US Ambassador to Tanzania
TreeHugger - 12/31/2011.
By Rachel Cernansky – The Oakland Institute – the think tank that revealed the connection this summer between Ivy League universities and land grabs in Africa – is now voicing concern about the support the U.S. ambassador to Tanzania is lending to a land deal in that country that would displace more than 160,000 people.
Big farm, small farm
Down East - 12/28/2011.
By Michaela Cavallaro – Farming in Maine is an exercise in contrast. On one end of the spectrum are the lifestyle operations, with one farmer, a few acres, and a small but diverse array of crops sold to individuals. Located largely within easy driving distance of the state’s population centers, these farms can satisfy their owners’ urges to till the earth — but perhaps not their desire to draw a steady paycheck. On the other end are Maine’s large producers.
No till farming not so great after all
The Contrary Farmer - 12/28/2011.
By Gene Logsdon – It was just a couple of handfuls of soil and a few drops of water, but for the world of modern farming, it might as well have been a bomb dropping on the staid headquarters of the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Washington.
