Seed Swap and Scion Exchange

Sunday, March 25
MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center, Unity

FREE, no registration required

For gardeners and orchardists, it's the most wonderful flea market in the world. Not only that – most of the best stuff is free!

MOFGA, the Maine Tree Crop Alliance, and Fedco will once again host the Seed Swap and Scionwood Exchange at MOFGA’s Common Ground Exhibition Hall in Unity.

Please bring any seeds, scionwood or cuttings you have to share freely with others. In recent years we have given away scionwood from well over 200 fruit varieties. These contributions make the day a success. If you don't have seeds or scionwood to share, don't fret and join us anyways – maybe bring some baked goods or fertile hatching eggs instead!

We’ll supply labels, tape and markers, and we’ll be selling T-shirts, books, grafting supplies and rootstock.

Admission is free. Information and schedule of activities

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Addressing the issue of horizontal gene transfer from a diet containing genetically modified components into rat tissues
African Journal of Biotechnology - 11/26/2014.
By Hanaa A. S. Oraby et al. - Transgenic DNA of the CaMV 35S promoter sequence was found in rat brain, liver and blood cells, showing horizontal transfer of transgenic DNA to exposed people/animals. The CaMV 35S promoter also can interfere with genetic processes in mammals.
Gene-Silencing and the 'Arctic' Apple
Live Science - 11/22/2014.
Op-Ed by Margaret Mellon - Biotechnology is heading into the Garden of Eden. A Canadian corporation, Okanagan Specialty Fruits, is offering a genetically engineered apple that doesn't brown after it's bruised or sliced. The U.S. Department of Agriculture appears to be on the brink of deregulating the so-called "Arctic" apple, allowing it to be planted and sold without any further oversight. The company won't label the apples as genetically engineered, but will sell the fruit under the Arctic apple brand.
Shrimp the 'canary in the coal mine' of Gulf of Maine
The Working Waterfront - 11/18/2014.
Op-Ed by Ben Martens - On Nov. 5, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Northern Shrimp Section met in Portland and, after a scientific presentation, voted unanimously to close the shrimp fishery for another year. The handful of fishermen and processors in the room pleaded for a short season - anything to keep boats on the water. However, the results of the annual survey and stock assessment showed the second lowest biomass on record (the lowest was in 2013).
Researcher Enlists Honeybees as “Flying Doctors” Against Crop Disease
Organic Farming Research Foundation - 11/18/2014.
Strawberry fields in Finland are plagued by grey mold, a fungus that quickly transforms scarlet berries into shaggy grey blobs, wrecking 20 percent of the country’s annual crop, on average. But Finland’s organic fruit farmers have a swarm of new allies in the battle against grey mold. Dr. Heikki Hokkanen, a researcher at the University of Helsinki, has enlisted bees to carry biological treatments from flower to flower, warding off disease as they pollinate.
