Farming in the Face of Climate Change

On-farm nutrient cycling is a key way that farms can build resilience in the face of climate change. At this year's Spring Growth Conference, co-sponsored by MOFGA, Unity College and The Resilience Hub, participants will hear about historical trends impacting Maine's weather patterns and the theoretical opportunities for closing the nutrient loop. The keynote speaker is John Aber from the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of New Hampshire. MOFGA's organic crop specialist, Eric Sideman, will facilitate a farmer panel discussion of practices on the farm. Details and registration.

E. coli O157 comes back with a vengeance

By Tom Philpott – Where’s the tainted beef? If you regularly eat fast-food burgers or unlabeled supermarket beef, you’ve almost certainly consumed a JBS product in the past month. That’s because Brazil-based JBS is the globe’s largest beef producer – and the third-largest U.S. beef packer. And what a month it’s been for this emerging beef behemoth. Here in the U.S., JBS has dramatically expanded a “voluntary” recall of beef “that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H,” the USDA reports.

Agencies urge gardeners to check for blight

ORONO, Maine — Agriculture experts across the state are asking home gardeners to check their tomato and potato plants for symptoms of late blight, a highly destructive disease. The Maine Department of Agriculture, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Maine Organic Gardeners and Farmers Association are all watching the spread of late blight, which was the cause of the Ireland potato famine in the 19th century. “We are urging home gardeners, especially those who may have recently planted tomato seedlings from a big-box store, to check for this disease,” Jim Dwyer, University of Maine potato specialist, said in a press release.

The excellent Food & Water Watch, a group that that watches out for the interests of both consumers and small-scale farmers, has issued an informative assessment (PDF) of the legislation in its current form.
