Maine farmer leads organic growers’ continued fight against Monsanto
Bangor Daily News - 3/30/2012.
By Jen Lynds – Bridgewater: Organic farmers will appeal a case dismissed in February that pitted them against corporate agriculture giant Monsanto in federal court. The group that brought the lawsuit is the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association, which is headed by Maine potato-seed farmer Jim Gerritsen of Bridgewater.
FDA rejects call to ban BPA from food packaging
Bangor Daily News - 3/30/2012.
By Matthew Perrone (AP) – Washington: The Food and Drug Administration has rejected a petition from environmentalists that would have banned the plastic-hardening chemical bisphenol-A from all food and drink packaging, including plastic bottles and canned food. The agency said Friday that petitioners did not present compelling scientific evidence to justify new restrictions on the much-debated chemical, commonly known as BPA, though federal scientists continue to study the issue.

They were gleaned from my upcoming book, “The New England Gardener’s Year, a Month-by-Month Guide for Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Upstate New York,” to be published later this year.

Portland Press Herald - 3/30/2012.
By Clarke Canfield (AP) – Portland: The winter's warm air temperatures have helped drive up water temperatures in the Gulf of Maine, in line with a continuing trend, and the warm waters could result in lobsters molting their shells earlier than usual and ocean algae blooming ahead of schedule.
