Learn to propagate and reproduce your favorite fruit tree varieties. Instructors Jennifer Ries of Whiffletree Nursery and Anne Hallee of Rising Up Farm in the Unity workshop, and C.J. Walke, MOFGA's Organic Orchard Educator in the Bar Harbor workshop,​ will explain why to graft and will demonstrate the techniques for Whip & Tongue grafting. Participants will graft trees to take home and plant. Care for the new trees will also be discussed. More details on the registration link below.

New Research Links Bee-Killing Insecticide to Monarch Butterfly
Beyond Pesticides - 2/27/2015.
New research from the University of Minnesota presents some of the first evidence linking the bee-killing insecticides known as neonicotinoids to monarch butterfly deaths. The study finds that milkweed plants, which monarch butterflies need to survive, may also retain neonicotinoids from nearby plants, making milkweed toxic to monarchs.

By Nathan Weller - In the face of overwhelming competition skewed by the rules of free trade, farmers in El Salvador have managed to beat the agricultural giants like Monsanto and Dupont to supply local corn seed to thousands of family farmers. Local seed has consistently outperformed the transnational product, and farmers helped develop El Salvador’s own domestic seed supply–all while outsmarting the heavy hand of free trade.
USDA Records Reveal Staffing Shortages Undermining Food Safety

Today, the national advocacy organization Food & Water Watch released an analysis of USDA records documenting the impact of long-standing vacancies in the ranks of USDA meat and poultry inspectors. These records, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, document the number of inspection tasks that were not performed and the most common reasons why over a two-year period, revealing that for meat and poultry, inadequate staffing and turn around times were often to blame.
