Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Keep Maine woods as a carbon sink
Portland Press Herald - 2/28/2009.
Op-Ed by Jonathan Carter – The Forest Ecology Network is launching the most important effort it has ever undertaken. We are calling for the Maine Woods to be designated as a National Carbon Storage Forest.
Putting winter pumpkins to use
Bangor Daily News - 2/28/2009.
By Sandy Oliver – It is time to pay close attention to pumpkins in winter storage which, according to my experience, are among the first to go. I pulled out two today, both had big squishy spots so I trimmed them up, peeled the hard parts and cut them up for a recipe that Ruth Thurston of Machias had given me a long time ago.
California declares drought emergency
Common Dreams - 2/28/2009.
by Peter Henderson – California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state emergency due to drought and said he would consider mandatory water rationing in the face of nearly $3 billion in economic losses from below-normal rainfall this year.
A chicken in every backyard
Bangor Daily News - 2/27/2009.
Reader Comments – Is it time to head back to the farm? – Though it may not appear to be cost effective to raise hens (or possibly other food animals), I think you miss some pertinent issues. The animals are not warehoused; you are not paying for transportation and using fuel (and incumbent greenhouse gases) that get your eggs to market; you know where your eggs come from and they will not have artificial hormones in them if you choose your feed carefully.
