"One hears a lot about the rules of good husbandry; there is only one — leave the land far better than you found it."

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Nature's resistance against climate change
Phys.org - 1/31/2014.
In a study recently published in the journal Oecologia soil ecologist Don A'Bear writes that global warming and altered rainfall patterns will increase the abundance and activity of woodland soil decomposers. The paper warns that climate change could have disastrous effects on the soil's ability to absorb carbon – a major global concern.
Top Six Reasons EWG Opposes the Farm Bill
Environmental Working Group - 1/31/2014.
By Scott Faber - Thanks to the leadership of Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), the farm bill that passed the House this week and will likely pass the Senate next week has some positive features, including new conservation requirements for farm businesses that collect crop insurance subsidies and more funding for local and organic farmers. But those important provisions are outweighed by new, expanded and largely unlimited subsidies that do too much to help the largest and most successful farm operations at the expense of family farmers and the environment.
The New Farm Bill: Yet Again, Not Ready for Climate Change
Mother Jones - 1/31/2014.
By Tom Philpott - Imagine you're a policy maker in a large country in an era of increasing climate instability – more floods and droughts, driven by steadily increasing average temperatures. And say the policy you make largely dictated the way your country's farmers grow their crops. Wouldn't you push for a robust, climate change-ready agriculture – one that stores carbon in the soil, helping stabilize the climate while also making farms more resilient to weather extremes?
Gruma Corp to FDA: Yes, it IS your job to determine if GMOs belong in all-natural products
Food Navigator USA - 1/31/2014.
By Elaine Watson - Civil litigation over whether GMOs belong in ‘all-natural’ products will continue to clog up US courts owing to the FDA’s refusal to weigh in on this issue, says Mission tortilla chips maker Gruma Corp.
