"Worms are the unsung heroes of our food chain. Their burrows allow oxygen and water to penetrate the soil, they add fertility and prevent flooding."

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Food security – the three ‘Rs’
Resurgence - 11/30/2009.
By Jonathan Porrit – Three fundamental principles should under-pin any approach to food security: resilience, resolarisation and relocalisation. More than two years after the 2007 floods in the West of England, over 150 families are still homeless – many of them in Tewkesbury. The anniversary of the floods prompted a number of moving interviews with these environmental refugees – driven from their homes by the kind of climate-induced disaster that we are going to see so much more of over the next few years.
Climate-friendly farming
Resurgence - 11/30/2009.
There is a newly emerging way of looking at farming that recognises good techniques being practised on any type of farm. It gives credit where due and creates a level playing field for assessing all approaches to farming: traditional, mechanised, intensive, organic, biodynamic or permaculture. This universal aspect of good farming could perhaps be called ‘rich-soil farming’.
Good year likely for shrimpers
Kennebec Journal - 11/30/2009.
By John Richardson – Maine's shrimp season starts Tuesday. And it's shaping up to be a good one, both for those who catch them and those who like to eat them. Northern shrimp are believed to be so plentiful in the Gulf of Maine that regulators have declared a full six-month fishing season for a second straight year.
Food and farms: Yielding high returns
Sustainable Industries - 11/30/2009.
By Sara Stroud – Jim Leap gives two pieces of advice to fledgling farmers in their first year setting roots on their own: Double your anticipated expenses and cut your anticipated income by half. It sounds like a tough dose of wisdom to swallow, but one that Leap, who is farm operations manager at the University of California at Santa Cruz’s (UC Santa Cruz) Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, says his former students often tell him is spot on.
