The Food Industry's Preemptive Strike Against Stricter Labels
The Atlantic - 10/29/2010.
By Marion Nestle – In an online press release yesterday, the Grocery Manufacturing Association (GMA) and Food Marketing Institute (FMI) announced a new labeling initiative for their member companie. Forget the consumer-friendly rhetoric. There is only one explanation for this move: heading off the FDA's front-of-package (FOP) labeling initiatives.
BP’s legacy: 6 months after the spill, fishermen still struggle
The Atlantic - 10/28/2010.
By David Thier – Six months after the oil spill began, Southern Louisiana looks fine. The sun is out, the oppressive summer humidity is starting to roll away, and fishermen in the Bayou are hunting redfish, trout, and black drum. The last signs of the geyser of crude that gushed into the Gulf of Mexico for three months are the occasional sheen in open water, a few dead patches of grass on the edges of Bay Jimmy, and caravans of "Vessels of Opportunity" scouring the Gulf for signs of oil and a generous check from BP.
Toxins Disrupting our Bodies
Civil Eats - 10/28/2010.
By Kristin Wartman – Recently, the Canadian government declared bisphenol-A (BPA) toxic, a step I hope the U.S. will soon take since the scientific evidence is mounting that BPA–along with many other endocrine disruptors in our environment–are abundant in our bodies and are having deleterious effects.

Grist - 10/28/2010.
By Tom Philpott – A couple of years ago, we had a massive fall harvest at Maverick Farms, including great quantities of butternut squash, leafy greens like kale and collards, and garlic. I mean, lots; it was out of control. Out of self-defense as much as anything else, I learned to combine these ingredients – which happen to be some of my favorite foods in the world – into a simple, satisfying take on a classic fall soup.
