Know Your Organic Producers!

Meet farm manager Tess Faller and assistant manager Anna Davis of Beech Hill Farm on Mt. Desert, which produces 5 acres of MOFGA certified organic vegetables, herbs and flowers and 1 acre of heirloom apples. The farm is owned by College of the Atlantic. Faller and Davis, with the help of COA students, provide organic produce to the MDI community. Previously the farm was owned by Barbarina and Aaron Heyerdahl, who donated it to COA in the late 1990s. Beech Hill Farm markets to COA's food service, A&B Naturals, Sawyers Market, Pine Tree Market, from the farm stand and through its summer and fall CSA programs. Farm Bill limbo leaves Maine businesses in lurch

By Ben McCanna – A partisan stalemate in Washington, D.C., has left one of Maine's largest industries in limbo. Jon Olson, executive secretary of the Maine Farm Bureau said the holdup in Congress affects all Maine farmers, but dairy farmers are in the worst spot.
Climate change may boost state’s cranberry take

By North Cairn – Maine's cranberry harvest is up this year, and warmer weather brought on by climate change might be one reason. Charlie Armstrong, a cranberry specialist with the Cooperative Extension at the University of Maine in Orono, said the warming weather since the mid-19th century – an average 1.5 to 2 degrees F. globally – may be a harbinger of changes to come for agriculture across the state.

Less well known is that emissions from burning oil, coal and gas are both heating up the oceans and making them more acidic. That is reducing the amount of seafood that can be caught, according to a new report released here.
