The Great Maine Apple Day: Learn, Taste, Share, Enjoy!

MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center, Unity

Celebrate the history, flavor and tradition of Maine apples while honoring the importance of a diversified, perennial agriculture. The annual Great Maine Apple Day, sponsored by MOFGA, Fedco and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, takes place on Saturday, October 25, from noon to 4 p.m., rain or shine, at MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center in Unity. Admission is $2 for MOFGA members and $4 for nonmembers. More information.

By Charles M. Benbrook and Brian P. Baker - Based on USDA data on pesticide residues, Benbrook and Baker find that fraud appears to be rare. Most prohibited residues found in organic produce are detected at levels far below the residues typically found in food grown with pesticides. Relatively high-risk residues are more common in imported foods – both organic and conventional – compared to domestically grown food. The authors conclude that incorporating relative dietary risk into the organic standard would be a more precautionary, risk-based approach than targeting enforcement to organic foods found to contain 5% or more of the applicable Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tolerance.

Feds make crop insurance more relevant for Maine fruit and veggie growers

By Christopher Burns - In a move that will likely help Maine farmers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will offer new crop insurance options to cover fruit and vegetables. The program will extend to smaller farms crop insurance coverage that traditionally benefited only growers of commodity crops. The whole-farm policy will give farmers the opportunity to get coverage for all crops, rather than on a commodity-by-commodity basis, which will provides flexibility for farms with a diverse stock.
