Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
From a garden, citizens grow
Portland Press Herald - 5/31/2010.
By Melanie Creamer – York: Dylan Munn wasn't exactly sure what okra was, but she planted one shoot after another Sunday at Zach's Farm in York. Dylan, 12, is one of 15 or so kids from the Coastal Clovers 4-H Club who got their hands dirty Sunday to grow vegetables for the club's Food for Families garden project. The garden is in its third year and has produced more than 7,000 pounds of produce from 20 varieties of fruits and vegetables for local food pantries.
Agriculture takes over the world
Treehugger - 5/31/2010.
By Jeff Nield – The intensity of agricultural land use has exploded over the past 300 years. Bill Rankin at Radical Cartography synthesized data from an expansive historical land-use survey to give us a telling visual overview.
Vermont family farms face a grim future
Burlington Free Press - 5/30/2010.
By Dan McLean – Lowell, Vt: Ashley and Jason Randall grew up on dairy farms a few miles apart in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. They know intimately the challenges the dairy industry faces. Jason Randall, a fourth-generation farmer, recalls his family’s scraping by on more than one occasion when he was growing up. “I didn’t even want to be a farmer as kid because of watching my parents struggle,” said Jason Randall, 27, recalling growing up in Troy. “I remember too many times going to bed hungry as a kid. There was no money.”
Animals, programs abound at Maine Fiber Frolic
Kennebec Journal - 5/30/2010.
By Wendy Almeida – Fiber enthusiasts take note: The Maine Fiber Frolic is scheduled for next weekend at the Windsor Fairgrounds, and you won’t want to miss this roundup of everything sheep, alpacas, llamas and rabbits.
