Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
UPDATED: USDA clarifies hydroponic organic status, draws criticism
The Packer - 1/25/2018.
By Tom Karst - The U.S. Department of Agriculture wants organic growers to know that hydroponic, aquaponic, and aeroponic operations can still be certified under USDA organic regulations.
In New York, farms team up to solve the big distribution question that tech can’t
The New Food Economy - 1/11/2018.
By Nina Sparling - When Brooklyn-based online farmers’ market Farmigo approached organic farmer Richard Giles with what looked like a small farm distribution solution, he didn’t see much of a downside. Giles could list his products on the company website and access new customers. He would drop off goods at a warehouse weekly and Farmigo would manage the delivery from there.
Over $2 million in federal funds to support comprehensive conservation of farmland and marsh habitat
Maine Farmland Trust - 1/11/2018.
By Ellen Sabina - Farms are often the largest remaining blocks of undeveloped land in Maine’s coastal communities, and they often contain significant wildlife habitat. But development pressure in coastal communities is the highest in the state, and farmland and marsh habitat are disappearing rapidly. A new project led by Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) and Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) in partnership with Natural Resource Conservation Services (NRCS), The Nature Conservancy, Downeast Salmon Federation and Kennebec Estuary Land Trust, will protect farmland that is adjacent to high value tidal marshes in Maine’s coastal plain, and mark a comprehensive effort to conserve Maine’s marshes.
Whole Foods’ new limits may squeeze small suppliers
The New Food Economy - 1/9/2018.
By Sam Bloch - The grocery chain is making suppliers fund a new demo system. How will that change the flavor of your local store?
