"The soil is, as a matter of fact, full of live organisms. It is essential to conceive of it as something pulsating with life, not as a dead or inert mass."

Chainsaw Safety Level I

First level of chainsaw instruction will include the following topics:
1. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
2. Saw Operation and Maintenance
3. Filing
4. Reactive Forces
5. Open Face Notch
6. Bore Cut
7. Tree Felling Information
8. Tree Felling with/without Wedges
9. Hazard Tree Management
10. Spring Pole Management

All students are encouraged to bring all equipment that they use in the woods to the class. There will be some extra PPE to share. Students will use instructor’s saw if their saw does not pass a safety inspection.

The first day will be mostly inside going over information and maintaining saws, bars, and filing chains. We will get outdoors in the afternoon to practice bucking and open face notch and bore cut. The second day will be outdoors. Each student will have the opportunity to drop a tree using the latest techniques learned in this class. Lunch will be provided.
