2017 Poster for the Common Ground Country Fair

2017 Common Ground Country Fair Poster!

The 2017 Common Ground Country Fair poster was unveiled during the Maine Agricultural Trades Show in January. The poster features three Columbian Wyandotte chickens roosting. This uncommon variety is well suited to Maine's climate and is raised for both meat and egg production. Local artist Dwight Gagnon of Benton created the design, which is a delightful and fitting image for the 41st annual Common Ground Country Fair, September 22, 23 and 24.
The poster is available online through our MOFGA Store.

Does the World’s Top Weed Killer Cause Cancer? Trump’s EPA Will Decide
Bloomberg - 7/13/2017.
By Peter Waldman, Lydia Mulvany, Tiffany Stecker and Joel Rosenblatt - Every year, farmers spray, on average, almost a pound of the herbicide glyphosate on every acre of cropland in the U.S., and nearly half a pound on every acre of cropland worldwide. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, a huge source of income for its manufacturer, Monsanto Co., and the foundation for its epochal foray into genetically modified organisms. If you know nothing else about GMOs and Monsanto, know this: The St. Louis-based company reengineered the DNA of corn, soybeans, and other crops for the primary purpose of making them resistant to Roundup.

The Washington Post - 7/13/2017.
By Peter Whoriskey - Of all the cartons of organic eggs sold in the United States, more than 1 in 10 originates from a complex here that houses more than 1.6 million hens.
‘Uncertainty and dysfunction’ have overtaken USDA program for organic foods, key lawmaker says
The Washington Post - 7/13/2017.
By Peter Whoriskey - The far-reaching difficulty that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has in determining whether imported “organic” food meets standards or is fraudulent means that it's hard to know what products can be trusted, a grain industry executive told a Senate committee on Thursday, as lawmakers prepare the next farm bill.
‘We’re losing more people to the sweets than to the streets’: Why two black pastors are suing Coca-Cola
The Washington Post - 7/13/2017.
By Caitlin Dewey - William Lamar, the senior pastor at D.C.’s historic Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, is tired of presiding over funerals for parishioners who died of heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
