2017 Poster for the Common Ground Country Fair

2017 Common Ground Country Fair Poster!

The 2017 Common Ground Country Fair poster was unveiled during the Maine Agricultural Trades Show in January. The poster features three Columbian Wyandotte chickens roosting. This uncommon variety is well suited to Maine's climate and is raised for both meat and egg production. Local artist Dwight Gagnon of Benton created the design, which is a delightful and fitting image for the 41st annual Common Ground Country Fair, September 22, 23 and 24.
The poster is now available online through our MOFGA Store.

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Letter to the editor: At Maine dairies, products are truly ‘organic’
Portland Press Herald - 5/16/2017.
By Chris Grigsby, Director of MOFGA Certification Services - The recent Washington Post article, “Review of big dairies raises doubts that some ‘organic’ milk is the real thing,” published in the May 2 Portland Press Herald, underscored one of the major enforcement challenges facing the organic dairy industry and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s administration of organic certification activities. It also created the impression that consumers cannot trust any organic dairy products, and that is unfortunate because it is untrue.
Trump's EPA Greenlights a Nasty Chemical. A Month Later, It Poisons a Bunch of Farmworkers.
Mother Jones - 5/15/2017.
By Tom Philpott - On May 5, more than 50 farmworkers outside of Bakersfield, California, were exposed to a highly toxic pesticide [the insecticide chlorpyrifos] that apparently drifted from a nearby field — at a high enough level that "twelve people reported symptoms of vomiting [and] nausea and one person fainted," reports the television news station Kern Golden Empire. "An additional twelve workers did not show signs of any symptoms," the station reported. "However more than half of the farm workers left before medical aide arrived."
Patients: Roundup gave us cancer as EPA official helped the company
CNN - 5/15/2017.
By Holly Yan - Christine Sheppard fantasizes about her life before cancer. Before she had to take painkillers "all the time." Before she had to seriously worry about when she might die.
Washington Post Investigative Report Uncovers Massive Fraud in Organic Grain Imports
The Cornucopia Institute - 5/15/2017.
Non-organic corn and soy, labeled as organic, are flooding U.S. ports, undercutting legitimate U.S. organic farmers, due to the USDA’s negligence. The organic industry’s most aggressive industry watchdog, The Cornucopia Institute, reinforced their call for USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue to correct the chronic pattern of gross corruption at the National Organic Program (NOP) by replacing the incompetent management.
