Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Vermont’s GMO Legacy: Pesticides, Polluted Water & Climate Destruction
Regeneration Vermont - 6/28/2016.
By Will Allen - Vermont has proven itself to be a leader when it comes to showing its concern over the use of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture and food production. It was the first state in the nation to pass GMO-labeling legislation, forcing food corporations nationwide to scramble and prepare to meet the law’s requirements when it takes effect in July 2016. But, in many ways, the passage of this historic law has left a false impression that it “solved” the GMO problem in the state. Nothing could be further from the truth.
How to Revive Local Agriculture in the United States
The Atlantic - 6/27/2016.
By Yoni Appelbaum - “I think this administration has really missed their chance to do some innovative things, but also to help the rural economy,” Representative Chellie Pingree said on Monday. The Maine Democrat is upset that even as demand for local, sustainable, and organic agriculture has boomed, the Obama administration has done little to support the efforts of small farmers to supply it. In her view, it’s a wasted opportunity.
Report: Herbicide, Chemical Fertilizer Use Doubled on Vermont Dairy Farms in a Decade
VTDigger.com - 6/27/2016.
By Anne Galloway - Agribusiness corporations, including Monsanto, Dow and Syngenta, promised dairy farmers that GMO corn would allow them to reduce the amount of chemicals needed for ample crop production.
